Our Expert consultation will help you to get the food license from the Government

FSSAI News Update: For not having a food license, food businesses can now face a fine of Rs. 5 lakh and six months in jail.

What is FoSCoS/FSSAI License?

On June 1, 2020, the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) was introduced by the FSSAI to replace the Food Licensing and Registration System.Operating a food product business requires a Food License Registration certificate. To manufacture, distribute, and transport food goods, you must register with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare is where FSSAI was founded. The Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 established the FSSAI. The quality, purity, and other crucial elements that clients may depend on are guaranteed by the FSSAI Certificate and FSSAI License.

FSSAI Registration/FSSAI License

Based on business kinds, turnover, and production capacity, FSSAI registration is granted. FBOs are eligible for essential, central, and state licenses based on installed capacity and turnover.

FSSAI Registration

Petty food manufacturers, or FBOs, with a revenue of less than Rs. 12 lakhs must register with the FSSAI unless they are subject to forced licensing.

An FSSAI registration certificate is required for small-scale food businesses that meet the following requirements, including hawkers, small retailers, itinerant vendors, temporary stallholders, and petty FBOs that produce or sell food goods.

  • Annual turnover does not exceed Rs.12 lakh.
  • Production capacity of food products (other than milk and milk products and meat and meat products) up to 100 liters or kg per day
  • Procurement or handling and collection of milk, is up to 500 liters of milk per day or
  • Slaughtering capacity is two large animals, ten small animals, or 50 poultry birds per day or less.
  • Distributes foods, including in any religious or social gathering, except a caterer.
FSSAI License

Businesses with a revenue of over 12 lakh or those involved in food processing and manufacture by the FBO are required to have an FSSAI license. There are two categories for FSSAI licenses: Central and State. The first digit of the 14-digit FSSAI license starts with 1. Depending on the size of their company, FBOs must obtain either a state license or a central license.

State license

The FSSAI state license is required by the state government for medium-sized manufacturers, processors, traders, marketers, or transporters.

The FBO is regarded as a medium-sized FBO and is required to obtain a state license if its annual turnover exceeds Rs. 12 lakh but does not surpass Rs. 20 crore.

When the FBO’s yearly turnover surpasses Rs. 20 crore, it is required to obtain a central license.

Central license

The FSSAI central license is required for any significant company that processes, transports, manufactures, or trades food goods internationally. An FBO is deemed a significant business and is required to obtain an FSSAI central license from the Central Government if its yearly turnover exceeds Rs. 20 crore.
